Meraki began with a gap that felt oddly overlooked. Muslim shoppers could find halal food almost anywhere, yet the toothpaste sitting in their own bathroom often carried an open question. Was the glycerin plant or animal derived? Was there anything doubtful in the flavouring? And the products that answered those questions confidently tended to feel either old-fashioned or purely functional, as though caring about halal meant accepting a lesser experience. That trade-off never sat right with us.
We wanted something different, and the ambition was specific. A toothpaste a modern Muslim could reach for without checking the label every single time, and without settling for a harsh or dated experience to get that peace of mind. Getting there meant starting from the ingredients rather than the marketing, and being willing to keep the formula short even when a longer one would have been easier to dress up.
Miswak was the obvious heart of it. A teeth-cleaning tradition well over a thousand years old, beloved in the sunnah, and studied for its natural properties, it carried both meaning and merit. Black seed oil, habbatus sauda, felt like its natural companion, an ingredient treasured across the Muslim world and valued for generations. Around those two anchors we kept everything clean: SLS free, no artificial sweeteners or colours, alcohol free, and halal certified so that the trust is verifiable rather than merely claimed. Certification mattered to us precisely because we did not want to ask anyone to take our word for it.
There was a quieter intention too. We wanted the product to feel like it belonged in a modern bathroom and a modern life, not set apart as something purely traditional or niche. Faith and everyday life are not two separate shelves. A person can want a contemporary, well-designed routine and want it to sit fully within their values, and there is no contradiction in that at all. The whole design follows from taking that idea seriously.
